What is a DMP file
DMP files are known as memory dump files on computers that run on the Microsoft Windows operating system. These files are oftentimes created when a program on Windows crashes due to an error. They can be used to find out about the error that caused a certain program to crash. Since DMP files are quite big and thus take up a lot of space, Windows users often delete the files.
The DMP files saves data from a crashed program's memory. They are typically created during the first reboot of the program after it has crashed. The typical file name associated with DMP files is "Memory.dmp". Other file names typical for the DMP file is a combination of date and sequence number: "mmddyy-##.dmp".
Here's a small, but not exhaustive list of programs that can open DMP documents:
- Microsoft Dumpflop utility
- Microsoft Visual Studio 2013
